a few pumpkins from the past...
We have made many different types of pumpkins over the years, but these are my favourites. The sick pumpkin, EEK, and the cannibal pumpkin were all made in 2008.
This year, we will all be able to go out for trick-or-treating together (usually my husband works), so we didn't decorate outside or carved pumpkins. It's weird not having these around this year!

NaNoWriMo ~ Third Round!
I have decided to participate again in NaNoWriMo.
This will be my third year.
I have 1 win, and 1 "not-win".
NaNoWriMo is a novel writing challenge, open to anyone.
Writing 50,000 words in one month is a big challenge,
but I like to be positive
and believe that I can do it again.
I did it once already, right?
I can see the difference between 2008 (win) and 2009 (not win).
Last year, I didn't have a plan, didn't even have an idea of what to write.
With NaNoWriMo, you are not allowed to start writing until November 1st,
but you can get some ideas in your mind, what type of novel you will write, who you are writing for. The first year I participated I had a plan in place, I knew I was going to write a fantasy story for young readers, a story that my two older children could read. I had a rough idea of my main characters before I started. I think just knowing what direction I was taking was a big help for me, even if the novel did take its own path once I started writing!
This year, when I was trying to decide if I was taking on this challenge or not, I asked myself what I would write about?
After about an hour of thinking about it,
I had come up with a rough idea.
I know what my plan is.
I don't know any specific details or even characters,
but I have an idea. I hope that will make a difference!
If you are interested in NaNoWriMo, you can still sign up
by visiting the site. The challenge starts
November 1st.

52 fridays and BAM ~ week 43 ~ JUMP!
I have been seeing other people's jump pics for some time now, and I always tell myself I need to try. Well, today was THE day! Celeste had to come and jump around too, and I did cheat a little by having Adrienne take the photos. We had a lot of fun and I know we'll be doing more of these in the future!
FUN!

thankful thursday
I am following sarah's example and doing a thankful thursday post. My thankful post is just a list, in no particular order...
- thankful for my family...the photo above is from April 2008. Today we are going to take another family picture
- thankful for the grocery chain here that takes this pictures at a very very low price so that we can get these done and give them to relatives
- thankful for my family's good health
- thankful that I can fit into the same pants as two and a half years ago
- thankful for a marriage that is standing the test of time

Unusual Day..
Today has been a weird day. We had our regular schedule of school work this morning. One of my cousins was supposed to come over late morning but never showed up. Then we were supposed to go to a birthday party, but the "Great Lakes Cyclone" was expected and so I decided to not go out and drive today.
We all went out to put away the few things that were still outside and checked if there was anything left in our garden. A few peppers and tomatoes were still there! I was surprised since most of the plants have looked pretty much dead for the last few weeks.
My kids love a good storm and were very excited, getting everything ready to spend the afternoon in our basement, food, flashlights, boardgames, radio, etc... I brought a couple of books with me and ended up falling asleep for about ten minutes until Celeste asked me if I was asleep!
The storm has gone by now, not as strong as it was supposed to be at all. We are a bit disapointed but happy that be safe, and best of all the birthday was re-scheduled for tomorrow!

Family Sweetness
I visited one of my aunts yesterday with two of my children
and she passed on a few fabrics "for Celeste and I"!
My aunt is so sweet and she loves to quilt.
I had asked her if she had any scraps she was planning on throwing out,
but she told me she was saving her scraps, like I and many quilters do.
She then started going through her stash of fabrics and giving us these!
I love that bright bubbly one.

quilts in progress...
I have 4 quilts in progress. These quilt tops were done last year and are still waiting to be finished! I am hoping to get them done by the end of this year, but not sure if that will happen.
The one laid out on the floor is a Christmas one, I am working on this one today. I am hoping to get a lot of the quilting done and get it ready for binding.
The other Christmas one, in the left front side of the photo is from the virtual quilting bee I took part in last year, the Traveling Threads.
Next to it, the purple/pink one is for Celeste. The top is also finished and waiting to be quilted.
Finally, the colourful one with lots of white is my 2009 Calendar Quilt.
The quilting part is my least favourite part. Mostly because I don't like trying to fit the bulk through my sewing machine. One reason why I prefer smaller projects like placemats!
The other reason why these have been sitting here for the last year is that I just don't have the budget for batting right now. Living simply is a choice and it does encourage me to think of alternatives, for example using an old flannel sheet instead of batting in one of the quilts.

Another Camera Strap
After I made and shared my scrappy camera strap photo here and on flickr, an online friend there (also a homeschool mom) liked it so much that I decided to make another one just for her.
I asked her what her favourite colours and the sizing of her camera strap were
and went digging in my scrap box.
And there you go, a custom made scrappy camera strap:

Last Saturday Night..
...We had a "Babi Day".
We decided to remember my husband's grandmother "Babi" on what would have been her birthday, last Saturday.
Some families might light a candle, visit the grave, or say a prayer. We didn't do that, the cemetery is close to 4 hours away. She passed away only last month.
What we decided to do instead, and will do every October 16th, is to have a "Babi Day".
She was a very caring great-grandma to my children, always giving them whatever they wanted, especially food, in particular junk food. They also could watch tv as much as they wanted whenever they went over to her house, and whatever they wanted.
Last Saturday night, we had junk food and watched a movie that the kids picked, no arguments from Mom or Dad! We had chips and dip, bagel crisps with cream cheese dip, and flavoured mini rice cakes. We also made fizzy drinks, mixing juice with sparkling water.
We watched "Aliens in the Attic" and we did talk a lot about our Babi.
We all agreed to continue this family tradition and I think
she would have enjoyed our evening too.

52 books :: book 44 :: Theodore Boone Kid Lawyer
Theodore Boone Kid Lawyer is the first children novel written by John Grisham. John Grisham is best known for his legal thrillers for adults, but this one is aimed for 8 to 12 year olds. He talks about this book in this video:
Theo is a 13 year old boy whose parents are both lawyers and dreams about being a lawyer or even a judge. He already knows so much about the legal system, courts, and trials. The story finds Theo in the middle of a murder trial, knowing a bit more than he should. The murderer is about to go free and Theo needs to decide what to do with what he knows.
This legal thriller was a well written, fast paced, and interesting. I will be recommending it to my two older children (11 and 13). I wouldn't be surprised if Theodore Boone became a series.
You can visit the Theodore Boone website to find out more about this story.
Books read: 44/52
Next book: The Element: How Finding Your Passion Changes Everything by Ken Robinson.

hooded bath towel to grow into..
We visited a cousin of mine last Thursday who just had a baby last week.
I like to give homemade gifts whenever I can,
so I made this hooded bath towel for the baby.
I also like to give gifts that last a long time and are not just for the baby stage!
So this towel should be good for many years...

Six litres
From the turkey we had at Thanksgiving, I was able to get six litres of turkey broth. I love making turkey broth, it is so simple to make!
I put the whole carcass in a big stock pot, the vegetables (carrots, celery, onions, garlic) that the turkey cooked on, and water enough to cover everything.
Once the broth has simmered for a few hours, I strain it, pulling out all the bones and vegetables. I then transfer the broth into a large bowl and put it in the fridge. By the next day, the fat has gone up to the surface and I can easily scoup it out.
I divide the broth and pour it in containers which I freeze, and use the broth as base for the various vegetables soups I like to make. Yum!

52 books :: book 43 :: The Pelee Project
The Pelee Project: One Woman's Escape from Urban Madness is written by Jane Christmas. I found this book by chance while searching the library catalogue for simple living stories. I thought I would give it a try since Pelee Island isn't too far from me.
The inside jacket of the book does a great job at describing this story, so I am just going to share a part of that :
"What happens when an exhausted working single mother leaves her life of 24-hour grocery stores, 12-hour work days, three-hour commutes, and retreats to a tiny Canadian island?"
This book did remind me a tiny little bit of Eat Pray Love, in that it tells the story of a woman that drastically makes a change in her daily life. Jane Christmas spent a 3-month sabbatical on Pelee Island in the winter and writes about her experiences.
I didn't love this book, but it was enjoyable enough to finish reading it.

Our Canadian Thanksgiving
Our Thanksgiving dinner was perfect, just us, full of good food and plenty of laughter.
We talked about what we were thankful for. We talked about the future.
I am not a big fan of turkey, but I love making stock with it the next day.
We had slow cooker sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, and mushrooms.
I also made cranberry sauce. Why buy the can stuff when making it is so easy?
I keep it simple by cooking cranberries (I used frozen this time) with sugar and water.
There are many recipes online, here is a simple one.
With the turkey, I followed Jamie Oliver's tip of putting some stuffing in between the skin and the breast of the turkey. It kept the breast meat super moist. Whenever I roast a turkey or chicken, I usually add an orange or a lemon in the cavity and put carrots, celery, onions, and garlic in the pan. Those are then used to make the stock (not the orange/lemon).

WIP ~ Library Tote
I have been working on this library tote over the weekend. I posted about the tutorial here. I want to do some hand stitching around the letters before I put the bag together. The blue/brown flower fabric is the inside lining. I will be making the handles in the denim fabric. This bag is a really nice size for library books. I hope to be finished by next weekend. As long as the weather is nice, and the kids continue to play with their friends outside, I can sew while watching a few episodes of Heroes!

52 books :: book 42 :: Simplicity Parenting
Simplicity Parenting: Using the Extraordinary Power of Less to Raise Calmer, Happier, and More Secure Kids by Kim John Payne was just perfect. I do not like parenting books, but decided to give this one a try anyway because it was related to the simple life. I have now read several books on simple living. All pretty much say the same thing, but this one was a little different because it related to parenting as well and the benefits a simple life can have on your family.
I really enjoyed this book. I took many notes, as you can see on the photo above. I think I have over 10 pages of notes from this book. I keep this notebook for when I read non-fiction books and want to write down some ideas or favourite quotes.
Simplicity Parenting is divided in six chapters only, but each chapter is huge! Some of the topics the author covers are the environment and all that is in it (toys, books, clothes, media, lightning, etc..), routine, food, schedules, and even talking!
Here is one of my favourite quote from the first chapter:
"By reducing mental and physical clutter, simplification increases a family's ability to flow together, to focus and deepen their attention, to realign their lives and dreams."
At the end of each chapter, the author has a list of "imagine..." which include points from the chapter to make you think...for example at the end of the soul fever chapter, one of the points in the imagine list was "Imagine how secure your child will feel knowing that they are deeply known and instinctivery cared for".
Each chapter is filled with information, points to think about and practical advice. There is a lot to think about in this book! Like I mentioned earlier, I don't like parenting books but with this one, I have taken a lot of information relevant to the simple life, and left the ideas that I didn't think were necessary for my family. I would recommend this book to other parents looking to simplifying their lives.
Books read: 42/52
Next book: I have 3 books to choose from: Theodore Boone by John Grisham, The Pelee Project: One Woman's Escape from Urban Madness by Jane Christmas, and Escaping the Endless Adolescence by Joseph Allen.

Catching up on Heroes
My husband decided to give Netflix a try (it's new in Canada) and so we have been checking out a few movies and tv episodes.
We don't usually watch tv much, but I sure did today! I caught up with Heroes, Season 3. I had watched the first two seasons a couple of years ago, and really liked them.
We still aren't quite sure if we will continue our subscription after the trial offer, not having had cable/satellite for the last two years, but this is a little different. The local video store closed its doors last summer so this might be a nice alternative to driving to the next town when we want to rent a newer movie that the library might not have available.
If you are in the US and have had experience with Netflix, I would love to hear about it, good or bad!

next on my project list...another bag!
I really like sewing bags and you can never have enough bags right? Here is another great looking tutorial for sewing a library bag:
The library tote tutorial is at whipup.net. A download is available with the instructions and templates for the letters. I hope to start this one this weekend with scraps for the letters and maybe some denim fabric, since I don't have any unbleached cotton canvas at the moment.

a productive day...
A productive day in our home school usually means.... a messy kitchen!
I will be the first one to admit I can't do it all.
My children will always take priority over the house.
Here's proof!
Now that our school day is done, I will go and take care of the disaster zone...

This past summer, we grew sunflowers in our garden. A few days ago, my husband cut off the flowers and we sat on our front step chatting and taking the seeds out for roating. I love these simple moments with my husband. The seeds are delicious!

Our Siberian Husky
When my family started talking about getting a dog last year, I wasn't too sure.
We have had dogs in the past, and the mix of young children and dogs never worked
for us. We didn't have the time to train them or take care
of them properly. I didn't want to repeat our mistakes.
I also read about different breeds, but since we had huskies in the past,
my husband preferred them.
We also searched for local breeders.
We knew we didn't want to buy from a pet store.
I also asked my husband to promise me that I would
be able to take whatever dog we got to obedience classes.
Orion is almost a year and a half now and he's the best dog we have had.
He has always been calm and laid back for a husky. He is even more now.
He is big, over 80 lbs (about 36kg).
He loves to be around me. He makes me laugh because he still follows me around
like when he was a young puppy.
Whenever I move to a different room, he moves along with me.
While we are doing school, he is lying down by the table.
When we go in the basement, he follows us there.
If I am cooking in the kitchen, he sits by the edge of it.
The first summer we had him, I spent many hours working on training him,
practicing what we both learned during the obedience class.
When we learned "look", which meant for him to look at me, in my eyes and
wait for the next command, we practiced over 300 times per week!
All day long, every day, I would test him. I would be busy
doing something with the kids and all of sudden
I would call his name and say "look".
I think it paid off. He listens to my commands.
He waits to eat until we tell him "go ahead" because we trained him
to do that. He knows which areas he is allowed in,
which places he can sit, like our couch in the basement,
but not our couches upstairs.
He knows to be gentle with little people,
and that he can be rougher
with my husband.
He has many tricks that we like
to practice with him, and
most of them he gets a reward for.
He is a great family dog.
And he's my walking partner.

The Happy Book :: Five Years from Now...in 2015
Jamie's assignment last week from the Happy Book, for the Next Chapter book club, was to think about ourselves five years from now.
Thinking about the future...In five years. In 2015!
What came first to mind was to figure out my age then and my children's. My husband was born in the same year as me, so we both will be 43 in 2015. We will have passed the big 40! That means to me that I should have ran a half or full marathon by then. I hope I am still running at least three days a week, and that we all are still healthy. I hope my family will still feel close as it does today.
My children will be...oh boy! That's when it gets a little more crazy!
My oldest daughter will be 18 in 5 years. She is planning on going to the Canadian Forces. I think that in five years, she will likely be there, either completing her training or stationned somewhere in the world. I can imagine that I will miss her terribly, but at the same time I will be extremely proud of her. I left home when I was 18 and I think it was the best thing I ever did! I hope she will be happy with her life wherever she is, either with us or away.
My son will be 16 in 5 years. I just can't picture that! I think he will always be my little boy in my mind. He has big dreams too. He wants to be a movie director and also wants to join the Canadian Air Force and become a pilot. In five years, I don't think he will be there, but maybe he will have made some longer movies for himself and his family. I can picture that, movies in our house, around the town... I think in 5 years, he will be home learning still with me. I think that as he gets older, it is even more a better suited environment for him.
My baby girl will be 11 in 2015. I think in five years, she will still make us smile and warm our heart.
In five years, I don't know where we will be living. My husband's work sometimes allows us to move around, so I am hoping we are able to take that opportunity again and move somewhere else in Canada.
In five years, I truly think I will still be homeschooling my children, but probably not all of them. I also hope I will still be doing some type of art for myself, photography, sewing, quilting, painting...something. Maybe I will have clearer dreams of what a small at-home business could be for myself. I have had a vision of making small items out of recycled fabric...something quilty and homemade. I know that photography will always be part of my life. Maybe with older children around, I will have more time to dedicate to that passion...
Five years from now... Looking forward has put a smile on my face, I think life is wonderful and I am optimistic about the future. Here is a quote I love:

I am only doing a few songs, these are a mixture of our current favourites that get us moving and dancing around in our kitchen or family room, and a couple of my all-time favourites!
